A Lesson Taught by a Pot of Uncooked Rice
A Lesson Taught by a Pot of Uncooked Rice
5 Trust in the Lord with all your
heart,
And lean not on your own
understanding;
Proverbs 3:5 (NKJV)
This afternoon, as my mom goes out to
a nearby market place to pick up the goods that she bought, she still left me
one single command, “as the rice hits the boiling point, turn off the stove.
Just wait for me by then and it’s now my call.”
Being concern as I am, in my mind, I
will just let the pot of rice to boiled then I will just lessen the heat so
that it will be cooked just right, because that’s how I learned it and I know I
am right. So I thought.
As my mom approaches home, she asked
me if I turn off the stove. I said that I just lessen the heat by the time it
boils. Then she explains to me that if I did it that way, the rice will be
overcooked because of too much water in it that is yet to be evaporated by the
heat. I need to turn off first the stove and let the rice to absorb most of the
water then open the stove again, but this time in a lower heat so that the rice
will be cooked properly. I ask her, why is that she didn’t explain it to me beforehand,
but the she ask me, why is that you didn’t obey me?
What I
Learned?
As I contemplate right at that moment
my experience with the pot of uncooked rice, that is the time that it hits me. This
is also the same method how God teaches His children. Like my mom, He didn’t
explain to the Israelites why they need to be circumcised or why they have to
follow the cloud in the dessert. All He is asking for the Israelites in the
time passed and for us today is to trust Him because He always know what is best for us.
That is also the same reason that my
mama taught me today. Knowing why beforehand is not trusting and trust is
immediate obedience without asking.
Then I
Realized . . .
Every time we gives in to our logic,
and rely on what we think we already know, that is the time when we overlooked
the lessons that matter most. If only I didn’t rely on my seemingly understood
way of cooking and obey my mama right
away, then things would be so much easier for she gave me her word that the
rest will be on her shoulders. Thankfully, she came back home at the right
moment and fixed my mess. That is how God works. He will give us His word,
all we have to do is to obey and the rest will all be His work. As man failed
to understand God’s will and didn’t trust Him, we fall short, but again God is
always on the right timing to fix our mess, that is why Jesus came down from
heaven to earth and died to Cross, so that we will be restored back again to the original plan, that is to manifest God’s glory through us by mirroring the life
of Christ.
Romans
8:29 says, For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the
image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
